Judging: Italian Greyhound, Toy Group

Thank you to UK Toy Society for the invitation to judge at your show, and to my very efficient stewards David and Nicole for making sure everything ran smoothly.

I found a wide variation in type, size and quality in my entry, and in many classes it was a compromise as I struggled to find the type, quality and movement I was looking for.

I was however, very happy with my main winners, and was thrilled that my BOB, still only a junior dog, and my best veteran were both shortlisted in their respective groups.

I did find a few flat feet and ‘soft’ fronts i.e. turning one or both feet out, and some very untidy movement. Quite a few were overawed by the noise in the hall, causing them to tense up on the table and also affecting movement in some.  However the majority of bites were good, and coats and skin were all good.

SBD/B (6,2a)

  1. 1. Wallace Horne's Skylar's Chico, neat fawn white trim dog of a lovely size and unexaggerated type, fine handsome head and appealing expression, neat ears well set, long neck into good shoulder, deep narrow chest to elbows. Fine coat and skin and in good condition. Turns a front foot a little on the stand. Curvy underline, fine bone and neat feet, I'd like a little more curve to his topline.  Moves nicely in profile with some lift, a little close behind.
  2. 2. Satchell's Littlebriton Bombers Moon, different type to 1st, larger black dog with a beautiful fine glossy coat and skin and in lovely fit and well muscled condition. Handsome head with lovely expression, very soft ears tend to drop forward. He tenses on the table which causes his topline to drop away but regains his shape on the move where he is sound in profile though would like a little more lift, and tidy up and down.
  3. 3. Read's Littlebriton Paper Moon
  4. VD (1a)
  5. PD (1)
  6. 1. Wallace Horne's Loutony Little Brother, 11 month old fawn/white pied, smaller and finely made boy, nice for type and quality, appealing head and expression, neat ears well carried, curvy body  and nice topline but needing to drop in chest. Lovely fine quality coat and skin. Unfortunately he has 2 repaired foreleg fractures which are difficult to overlook and do affect his front movement, he is a little close behind too.
  7. JD (4,1a)
  8. 1. Lee & Amsel's Artmeis Jokers Wild, 13 month old fawn white trim, this exciting young dog had everything I was looking for. He is masculine yet elegant, beautiful quality and type and just flows from head to tail, he is so smooth and curvy, in fit and well muscled condition without being bulky. Beautiful refined head and expression, large dark eyes, long elegant neck into smooth shoulders and straight front, curvy top and underline, strong hindquarters which he can overstretch a little on the stand at times. Fine quality coat and skin. He is lovely to watch on the move, with correct lift and flexion in front and propulsion from behind, he is absolutely sound, and has such presence and attitude. Still needing to drop a little in chest but he is young and will only get better, I loved him. CC, Best of Breed and shortlisted in a very strong toy group, I'm certain he will be collecting many more CCs before long.
  9. 2. Bird's Tamiskene Hamilton, Fawn/ white trim 12 month old, another very nice boy who is looking a little immature as only just out of puppy, lovely for type and quality, handsome refined head and appealing expression, long neck into fine shoulders, straight front, deep narrow chest with fine bone and neat feet. In beautiful fine soft coat and skin, curvy underline,  nicely angulated hind. Moved very soundly in all directions with lift in profile, just preferred the topline of 1st.
  10. 3. Brundtland's Miwell Alex Mcqueen
  11. PGD (3)
  12. 1. Wallace Horne's Skylar's Chico
  13. 2. Littlebriton Bombers Moon
  14. 3. Walton's Valentini Edoardo
  15. LD (2)
  16. 1. Lowe & Guidotti's Littlebriton Moon Warrier, quality black dog with a gorgeous dense glossy coat and fine skin and in lovely fit and well muscled condition, handsome head and expression with neat ears well carried. Long elegant neck into correct straight front with fine bone and neat feet. He can tense on the stand which exaggerates his topline but he has lovely curves to both his top and underline when more relaxed. Strong well angulated hind. He moved very soundly in all directions although I would prefer a little more lift in front.
  17. 2. Walton's Valentini Francesco, Fawn and white boy in a larger, stronger and longer mould, a more houndy type. Quite a strong but handsome head, long neck into straight front, stronger in bone than 1st. In lovely fine soft coat and fit, well muscled condition. A little long in loin but he has some rise and a nice curvy underline. Movement is very sound and balanced in all directions but lacking lift in front.
  18. OD (2)
  19. 1. Chau & Steele's Ch Jaros Ferazi Et Tu Brute at Sfizimio (imp USA), a very striking and elegant black with white trim, and a real showman. Lovely fine chiselled head and appealing expression, small fine ears carried well,  straight front with fine quality bone into neat feet. Tightly fitting shiny coat in beautiful condition, he has quality all through. Moved with style, great lift and flexion in front and propulsion from behind, he is perfectly sound and eyecatching and a pleasure to watch on the move. Shows so well, but just tending to sink his neck back into his shoulders today when free standing and looking up at his handler, making his neck look shorter than it actually is. A very lovely boy and a worthy champion. RCC
  20. 2. Mellis' Petoski First Edition for Lamoye, black dog of a larger and stronger type, handsome head and expression, neat ears well carried, long elegant neck into a straight front with neat feet. Fine glossy coat, in good fit and well muscled condition. Curvy top and underline, strong hindquarters used well on the move, though he does flatten a little, and a little untidy in front movement today.
  21. VB (3,1a) These mature ladies could teach some of the younger ones a thing or two about fitness and muscletone, their condition was spot on.
  22. 1. Amsel's Ch & Am Ch Artmeis Golden Oriole of Regallust, 7 year old dark fawn I have previously given a CC to and I still love her. She has the most beautiful refined head and melting expression,  elegant neck into correct shoulders, straight front and neat feet. Very curvaceous top and underline, and a lovely fine close coat. Still super fit and well muscled, she moves with style and enthusiasm, absolutely true in front with lift and flexion, strong hind propulsion. She is the dam of my BOB and RBCC winners- obviously a great producer too. In close contention for the RCC, just pipped by her daughter on her slightly more accurate hind movement today. BV and shortlisted in the Veteran group.
  23. 2. Doherty's Jaros a Dance with Dragons (imp USA) 8.5 year old quality fawn/white bitch in a larger mould but with a super curvy and elegant outline. She has a lovely head and expression, long elegant neck, straight front and neat feet, fine close fitting coat and skin. Sweeping curves to her top and underline, strong well angulated hind and long tail to balance. In fit and well muscled condition. A really lovely mover, super lift and flexion in front, propulsion from behind, just flattening slightly on the move. Two very lovely veterans.

MPB (2,1a)

  1. 1. Fentiman's Miss Blue Sofia, very immature nearly 8 month old blue, pretty head and expression though would like a little more underjaw, lovely fine soft coat and skin. She is very shallow in body at the moment, needing to drop in chest and fill out in front, though she has some curve to her topline at this stage. Moved ok with some lift, hocks a little loose moving and standing. Looking a real baby at the moment but confident and taking all in her stride.
  2. PB (1)
  3. 1. Brundtland's Velvethound Lilly, 10 month old dark blue with a beautiful coat and skin, pretty head and expression, though would like more underjaw. Long elegant neck, curvy top and underline, straight front, fine bone, neat feet, good hind angulation. She tends to tense and fold up on the table, making a better shape on the move where she looks to be sound all round when not pulling to the side. Both handler and puppy need more ring training for her to show her attributes. BP as she was the most ‘together’  and true to type of the 3 puppies present.
  4. JB (4,1a)
  5. 1. Mellis's Miwell Mary Quant by Lamoye, 17 month old red, a taller girl but very nice for type and lovely curves and quality all through. Beautiful fine close fitting coat and skin. Very attractive head and expression though I would like a little more underjaw, small fine ears well set, elegant neck into correct shoulder, fine straight bone and neat feet. Deep narrow chest, curvy topline, lovely tuck up, strong hindquarters. She moved very soundly and accurately in all directions but would just like a little more lift. Liked her a lot.
  6. 2. Hague's Laborghini Love Potion, 17 month old cream, smaller and more compact girl but not the curves or outline of 1st. Fine pretty head but lacking in underjaw, small fine ears, long neck, would like more curve to topline and still needing to fill out and deepen in chest, nice tuckup. Fine bone, lovely fine soft coat. Moved ok behind, a little untidy in front movement and was obviously unsettled by the noise in the hall.
  7. 3. Pendlebury's Vivacious Versace
  8. PGB (7)
  9. 1. Carmody's Littlebriton Dragon Queen, quality fawn, quite a comfortable winner of this class as she kept her shape on the stand and on the move. She has a lovely fine tight fitting coat and is in fit and well muscled condition without being bulky. I would like a slightly finer head but she has a lovely expression, long elegant neck into straight front, deep narrow chest,  fine strong bone and neat feet. Lovely curves to her top and underline which she held on the move, strong well muscled and angulated hind. Moved very well and accurately, with lift and flexion in front and propulsion behind, very tidy up and down and well handled.
  10. 2. Walton's Minitopo Maat, elegant blue with white trim, a little finer than 1st, lovely for type and quality, pretty head with neat fine ears, long neck, straight front, deep and narrow chest, would like slightly tighter feet. Very nice curves to top and underline, well angulated hind. Soft fine quality coat and skin. Moves soundly in all directions, has some lift but just tends to lose her topline and is a little bum high going round.
  11. 3. Owen's Dazzling Lady Grey
  12. LB (3,1a) Not an easy class to judge, compromises for type and soundness had to be made and it came down to movement on the day.
  13. 1. Read's Littlebriton Paper Moon, up to size sable with a beautiful fine quality coat and skin, attractive head and expression with lovely dark eyes. She was a little unsettled by the noise in the hall and seemed quite tense and reluctant today. She tends to stand a little 10 to 2 on the table and was folding herself up on the stand today, exaggerating her topline though she does have a lovely curvy outline when more relaxed. A little long in loin but she has a good strong well angulated hind. Sound moving, with good lift in front, just moving a little close behind today.
  14. 2. Pendlebury's Raising Venus Du Zephyr de Bizance, cream in a smaller frame and with a lovely fine coat and skin. Another who was unsettled by the noise today. Pretty head and expression but would like more underjaw. She is narrow in front and turns a foot out, I also would like more depth of chest. Curvy outline and a good tuckup, nice hind angulation but would like a little more muscle tone. She is quite upright in front which showed in her front movement, a lot of lift but without flexion in profile, she was also crossing in front and moving wide behind today.
  15. OB (3) This was a lovely class of 3 quality bitches.
  16. 1. Doherty's Ch. Littlebriton Winter is Here, white/fawn pied who is so feminine and just beautiful for type, style, outline and quality. She has a pristine fine soft coat and skin, a gorgeous refined head and expression, fine rose ears well set, long elegant neck into lovely clean shoulders, straight front with deep narrow chest and fine bone down to neat feet. A series of elegant curves, ideal top and underline with lovely tuckup, strong well angulated hind and in great muscletone without being bulky. When she gets going she really moves out,  with lift and flexion in front and propulsion behind, absolutely sound and holding her lovely shape all the way, a pleasure to watch. Loved her, for me she is a classic Italian Greyhound. BCC, she was just a little unsettled in the challenge for BOB whereas the dog was on top form today.
  17. 2. Hayden-Smith's Artmeis Summer Breeze at Birchwind, ultra feminine dark fawn/white trim who is a little smaller and finer than 1st with the most exquisite head and melting expression, fine ears, elegant neck into smooth shoulder, straight front with fine bone and neat feet. Deep narrow chest and a lovely tuckup with a curvy topline, strong well angulated hindquarters. Another who was in great fit and well muscled condition while retaining curves and quality. She is a lovely mover too, with lift and flexion in front, drive from behind and absolutely sound, tidy up and down, holding her topline at all times. Just pipped her mother for RCC as she was a touch more accurate behind today, she is half-sister to my DCC.
  18. 3. Doherty's Ch. Littlebriton Kissed by Fire
