U.K. TOY DOG CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 2023
MALTESE CRITIQUE - Judge: PETER MOORBY
I would like to thank the committee for affording me the opportunity to judge at their lovely show, and the exhibitors for accepting my judging decisions with the spirit of competition so generously.
Having judged this breed at all levels over 30 years I would like to share some general observations of my findings today that I hope will be taken in the spirit of opportunity for the breed, and a way forward for guidance with quite a number of new people to me now showing in the breed which is to be welcomed.
It was a very mixed bag of extremes on this occasion in quality, breed standard, presentation, and showing.
However, on the positive side it was good to see new people now showing the breed, and Improvements in mouths, dentition, pigmentation, and coat quality. The Best Veteran was one of the best examples of these qualities being 91/2 years of age.

Class 251 PD. Ent 2 Abs 1
1st Jackson & Wylie: Benatone Jubilee Party 11mth D Beautiful in all departments exceptional head outstanding pigment lemon markings to coat can often come with very strong pigment which are acceptable especially at this stage which would be expected to fade as age increases profuse exceptional quality coat and delightful to watch move around the ring would expect this dog to have a very bright future. Best Puppy in Breed
Class 252 JD Ent 3 Abs 0
1st Flannigan & Dornan: Snowkai’s Piano Man 13mth D This boy started out for just a few seconds a very little unsure but very quickly gathered himself and never looked back. He excelled in head beautiful balance correct size and shape good body and covered by an exceptional coat great pigment lovely eye dark haloes and moved like a dream and true Maltese delighted to award him DCC
2nd Foster: Prince Valentino 13mth D Poor presentation lacking good grooming detracted from this dog however, he had a quality coat on inspection. A good head and could do with a little more substance to body although he did present a good shape and size and moved very well.
3rd repeat1st class 248
Class 253 PGD Ent 3 Abs 0
1st Urquart: Blackpark Polar Bear 4yr D Have seen this dog from the ringside many times but never looked better than today. My notes unfortunately say nearest dog to a Maltese in this class. Good correct eye but sadly a little lost coat surrounding both eyes which detracted from the look. He had good pigmentation on a correct head. Moved very well and true.
2nd Blythin: Julesville Percival 3yr D Nice size and shape good pigmentation presentation could be better moved well.
3rd Blythin: Julesville Basile

Res DCC
2nd Welbourn: Ch Sunn De Lion Kaifing At Zumarnik (Imp Rus) 4yr D Bigger type to 1st and would prefer less body although he had good balance good head and particularly nice eye with the best haloes of the day which seems to be a disappointing loss of this true characteristic for this breed and lack of pigment assists this loss in the breed he had a quality coat but 1st just seemed more true to breed but a good quality dog never-the-less and a worthy champion
3rd Holland & Holland: Benatone Perfect Gold
Class 256 Vet B Ent 1 Abs 0
1st Grant, Grant & Walker: 9.5yr B What a delight and a pleasure to go over this girl she is breathtakingly beautiful and an absolute credit to her owners. Her condition is outstanding for her age lovely head eye and mouth with full outstanding dentition and so true in bite. In lovely full coat of pure white quality she moved well but just didn’t have that extra sparkle of a youngster but well considered her for higher awards and deserved best veteran in breed
