Judging:

I'd like to sincerely thank the committee for the invitation to judge my heart breed at the prestigious UK Toy Dog Society Championship show 2024. Thank you to those who entered their lovely Pekes and to the stewards too for keeping things running smoothly. This year marks 7 years since I've judged my own breed due to the Covid cancellations as this appointment was supposed to be in 2021. I thoroughly enjoyed my day even with some tough decisions. The depth of quality was high and I'd have taken both my CC and RCC winners home. My day was made special by my Mother watching and supporting ringside along with some of my other good friends who I respect so much.

I found no obvious health problems but would have liked more of the typical rolling gate and a few tighter fronts, these are absolutely breed specific requirements that we should all be striving to achieve. Size in males is a big thing for me, I make no secret of the fact I like a small, compact male and a bigger glamorous bitch, whilst these requirements are at the top of my list when judging, the construction has to match the size as that is ultimately the most important thing to me.

I'll end my pre-amble by mentioning my entry, which I'd have liked more of but I understand that not everyone within the breed likes to take their chances under true breed specialists. I think it's important to remember I have never known a life without Pekingese in it, being the youngest in the breed with my own successful kennel alongside my dedicated Partner and Son, I'm sure this played a part in some deciding not to support me. That is fine and rest assured that none of this distracted me from doing the job in hand and I had the most pleasurable day! Please do well to remember that ‘you have to be in it to win it’ …. NONE of our dogs win being sat at home! And ask yourselves what this breed would be without the specialists, their eye and their knowledge?!

The beautiful specials I provided for winners seemed to be well appreciated which was a bonus and I was proud to watch my BOB Peke in the big BIS ring where he went on to be shortlisted in a great line-up by one of the most respected judges in dogs, Mr. Nick Gourley.

1st: 1123 CLIFTON, Mrs Karen Hemmingway's Marley at Clifcastle. A silver fawn boy who is up to size for me personally but nevertheless a good start to the showing game for his owner. He has an open face with no exaggeration and the most jet black pigment, well boned & heavy to lift. Moved well at a steady pace, would just like more rolling gait coming from a tighter front. He had a level topline and firm hindquarters with plenty of muscle tone. Well deserved his Best Special Beginners in breed & I was chuffed to see him go on to win Special Beginners group 4 in the big ring.

1st: 1127 KLERKS-DELUCCHI, Mr J & Mrs A Klerkshof English Monarch. What a delightful puppy. So well constructed as one always expects from this famous kennel who have dedicated their lives to this breed. An honest head with dark eyes, open nostrils, a firm under jaw and great pigment. Very thick bone, tight front with chest developing. Short in back, level topline, firm well angulated hindquarters. High tail set and presented to perfection. Heavy to lift with the correct weight distribution. After losing some puppy coat, this made his shape visible and it was a pleasure to see him moving well with the typical rolling gait and holding himself nice and compact on the move. A very worthy BPIB today.

1st: 1149 THOMAS, Mrs A Meritorous Forever Dreamer. A young 21 month old fawn boy who I have admired greatly from ringside … mainly for his size and movement. I was very pleased to see him enter the ring and he did not disappoint in the slightest. He has a lovely head, so typically ‘envelope’ shaped and a shallow forehead. Well spaced out features and absolutely gorgeous large, dark eyes. Open nostrils, level lips with a lovely finish of mouth and the required chin. Short thick neck, level topline, strong and correct behind. Heavy to lift with a big spring of rib for his size and a distinct waist. Harsh coat texture which was presented to perfection. He was moved so steadily and at the correct pace with the correct movement. I thought in this class that he was everything I was looking for today and then in came his Brother in the next class ……..

2nd: 1123 CLIFTON, Mrs Karen Hemmingway's Marley at Clifcastle. 1st in Special Beginners.

Class 301 LD (7 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1148 THOMAS, Mrs A Meritorous Welsh Whisper. 21 month light red boy who shocked me. I say that because from ringside I'd always preferred his Brother but as usual with this breed, hands on is essential and this changed my mind on the day. A lot of the same comments about his brother in the previous class apply here too, so this will be repetitive but both are worthy of fabulous critiques. On the first go around with the other dogs, he owned the ring… he came, he saw and he conquered. The first thing that hit me is his perfect size which is so critical in a male. Small, compact, well constructed and Lion like in appearance. As a stood back from the examination table and walked up to him, his so typical Pekingese head and expression excited me and made me smile. He has a glorious headpiece with everything in the correct place. Stunning dark, large eyes!! Open nostrils, perfect finish to mouth and plenty of chin. Jet black pigment and well cushioned cheeks. All on a ‘so typical’ envelope shaped wide and shallow headpiece. His front is thick, wide and well set, tight at elbow with a fabulous chest for his size. Short thick legs & neck. Level topline, high tail set and firm well angulated and parallel  hindquarters and a distinct waist. Great spring of rib and plenty of substance on this small and well constructed Pekingese male. His coat was harsh to the touch and expertly presented. On the move he had the best rolling gait on the day and stayed compact and together as he gently moved at the correct speed so typical for this breed…. They're never to be rushed! I was delighted to award him his 2nd CC and in the best of breed challenge the nod went to him and his effortless movement over my glorious bitch winner.

2nd: 1136 OADES, Mrs B Brentoy Max Power

5 year old fawn boy. A bigger type than my ideal but he won his place in this strong class on his fabulous and correct construction as one would always expect from this longstanding and well respected kennel. Lovely large headpiece with dark pigment and everything where it should be, big bone, tight wide front, deep chest, short neck, level topline, correct in hindquarters and super heavy when lifted with the correct weight distribution. There's not a lot I'd change on him. Moved well once settled. A very honest boy.

1st: 1125 HEAP &RANSOME, Mr & Mrs & Mr A & J & A Lorraine Shiera D'artagnan JW

5 year old red. I've always admired this boy, right from his puppy classes to now as a fully mature adult. I've seen him overlooked on one too many occasions but not today! His size is what I strive for when breeding for a male. He has a lovely open face, wide and shallow & a delightful expression that draws you in. Beautiful eyes, open nostrils and a firm under jaw. Good pigment and cushioning to cheeks. When going over him, everything matched his size when it came to bone and substance, he has everything required for a male and was perfectly balanced. When moving he holds himself perfectly and is shown at the correct pace. Today, he won a lovely open class and was a very worthy RCC winner in a quality line up. I hope more judges appreciate just what a small, compact and quality male he really is.

2nd: 1137 OADES, Mrs B & EVANS, Mrs M Brentoy Zander. A 5 year old black. A dog I've admired from ringside on several occasions. His head was one of the best on the day and one I could look at all day… exquisite! He was typically sound and correct on hands on examination. Just lost out today to a male who was more my preference for size. He also wasn't as settled as I've previously seen him on the move today. He will be a worthy Champion.

1st: 1138 OADES, Mrs B & EVANS, Mrs M Brentoy Veda. 8 year old fawn bitch. So undeniably female, being very pretty and feminine in appearance. Really solid and sound construction. She has a gorgeous head and clearly kept in great condition. She moved well too. A nice bitch with nothing to hide & it was a pleasure to judge her today. A very worthy winner of best veteran in breed.

Class 306 JB (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1143 ROGERS, Mrs C Ralshams Lady Madonna. 16 months, clear red, which is my absolute favourite colour! This is a bitch that I was really happy to see enter the ring today. I have seen her blossom slowly since 6 months old at her very first show. It was a real treat to get my hands on her today. I will start by saying her head and expression are absolutely exquisite, everything as it should be. She was well off for body, bone, chest and substance.. more than I'd usually expect from a junior bitch. Everything was in place and there's absolutely nothing I can really fault. She moved well at the correct pace and was at one with her handler. A pleasure to go over and a pleasure to judge. She was heavily considered for the RCC today but just had to give way to a bitch that I've always loved. I think this girl is more than worthy of her Champion title and I can see why she's had a successful start to her career already for one so young. I hope more is to come for her and I will watch with interest how she matures even further.

2nd: 1144 SAKALS, Mrs Mairita Curonians Alla Bixia. Really liked this fawn girl. Very pretty head with well placed features. She was sound and honest to go over. She  moved well and was unlucky to meet the winner. A credit to her breeder. This breed needs all the people they can get and I hope to see this exhibitor at more shows with this promising prospect.

A lovely red girl. One I'd not seen since 6 months old so it was a treat to judge her now she's matured up. She had a lovely head and was sound throughout. She moved well, albeit a little too enthusiastic at times but it was great to see her having fun. I saw what I needed and that was an honest bitch of quality.

1st: 1129 KLERKS-DELUCCHI, Mr J & Mrs A Klerkshof Starina. Fawn. 19 months. A lot to like about this girl. A real glamour puss and she's sound throughout and compact on the move. She moves at the correct speed with her handler. She needs to mature in body which will come in time but I am sure she has a bright future.

1st: 1128 KLERKS-DELUCCHI, Mr J & Mrs A Klerkshof Country Rose. Fawn. 3 years old. When exhibiting at the shows every week, you come to expect a certain quality from top winning kennels. This is exactly what this girl was… A bitch with years worth of quality breeding behind her, resulting in yet another fabulous Klerkshof bitch. Her head is textbook for me, her eyes absolutely melt you.. so large and dark, I had to keep going back for another look! Her expression was lovely with good pigment, correct finish of mouth and a wide firm under jaw too. She has a thick strong neck, level topline, short in back, tight bowed front, well developed chest that filled my hand, well sprung ribs and correct in the hindquarters. So heavy to lift with the weight correctly distributed with her being heavier at front and having a distinct waist. She moved so typical and dignified. She was in beautiful coat and condition and presented well. Pleased to have awarded her her 2nd CC.

2nd: 1131 LEONARD, Mr Andrew Mezrab Jodie

Fawn. 2.5 years old. Oh what a delight it was to finally judge this girl, her owners are aware I've always liked her. A real typey bitch with lots to offer. She's so feminine and pretty!! I loved her head, so soft in expression which always draws you back in for a second look! That jet black pigment and well cushioned cheeks were the best of the day and a quality I love in a Pekingese headpiece. Her body was well constructed and sound in all aspects. Really coming into her own now mature and can definitely hold her own in any company. She was presented to perfection and a credit to her owners. She beat two worthy Champions in this class and was awarded the RCC when called back in, which she thoroughly deserved. Many attributes to like on this girl and nothing I'd fault on her. This is a bitch that any breed specialist or all rounder should appreciate. She moved well albeit a bit rushed but I feel she will be a very worthy Champion as I have no doubt that her 3rd CC is coming!

I feel I need to write a little something about the two Champion litter Sisters in 3rd and 4th place today in this class. Again, fabulous Klerkshof bitches! Their placings do not reflect my opinion on them as I think they're both stunning and very worthy title holders. Both sound with good construction, fully mature now and in good coat and condition. They moved and showed well. Today may not have been their day but I appreciate them being entered and having the pleasure of going over them. I can see what other judges appreciated and I am sure they will continue to have many more winning days during their show careers.
