I’d like to begin by thanking the committee of Paignton and District Fanciers Association for inviting me to judge the Irish Setters at their show this year. I have often exhibited here and really appreciate that this is one of the few shows which still provides benching, which for me as an exhibitor makes life much easier.
I’d also like to thank my stewards Martin and Karen for helping to keep things running smoothly. Good stewards should not be underestimated!
And of course my thanks go to everyone who entered their beloved and beautiful Irish Setters under me. It is always an honour and a privilege to be asked to evaluate our lovely breed.
The ground made movement challenging as not only was our ring on a bit of a slope, but with it being so hard with loose, dry grass, standing was also difficult at times.
The depth of quality in some classes was a sight to behold and made for some very difficult decisions, on the down side I did find some incorrect mouths and also some very long nails which was a little disappointing.
I know how much work you all put into getting your dogs ready for a show and how disappointing it can be if you don’t get the place you hoped for, but just remember, this is just one show and one judges opinion on that day. Whatever the outcome at this one, you still take the best dog home and there’ll be another show around the corner!

Two very different boys, but both very nice examples of our breed.
1st: 1558 PRESTA, Mr Mimmo Vamos Della Magna Sila -Liked the racy outline of this boy. Pleasing head and eye with low set ears. Good reach of neck and correct topline. Plenty of forechest and depth to his chest. Good width of thigh and rear angulation. Stood parallel front and rear and drove off well from strong hocks.
2nd: 1576 RANDLE, Ms S J Rionore Bewitching Memory -Another nice boy, very different type to 1. A good, old fashioned setter with lots to admire. Lovely head with good finish to foreface and chiselling. Low set ears and strong, well arched neck into well laid shoulders. Well sprung ribs and good width of thigh. Preferred his head to 1, but sadly just not as positive on the move today. Close decision between the two.

Oh my goodness, what a class this was! I can’t remember seeing so many quality dogs in one class for a long time. A nice problem to have, but disappointing for the gorgeous boys who had to go cardless today.
1st: 1518 BOTT, Mrs Marita Bardonhill Million To One --  I have admired this dog many times from the ringside so was delighted to be given the opportunity to go over him and he definitely didn’t disappoint. Classic racy outline with everything in proportion and nothing overdone. Masculine without any coarseness and enough coat to finish the picture without obscuring his fantastic construction. Beautiful head, with plenty of work showing brow and expression with lovely dark eyes. Good finish to foreface and lovely low set ears. Good reach of neck into well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Plenty of forechest with good depth to chest and plenty of spring to his ribs. Correct length of loin under a gently sloping topline and correct tailset. Good width of thigh with well developed second thigh and strong hindquarters. Well off for bone with lovely tight feet. Lovely free flowing movement with reach and drive using his tail to full effect. Really unlucky to meet my CC winner today, but a very well deserved reserve CC.

Flows beautifully from his nose to the tip of his tail. Lovely head with soft, cheeky expression and lovely soulful eyes. Well off for bone standing on lovely tight feet. Correct angulation front and rear with good depth and spring to his ribs. Moved well with lovely tail carriage, but 1 was a fraction more positive in footfall today.
