Judging: Boston Terrier, Utility Group

BOSTON TERRIER

It was a great honour to judge this beautiful breed in your country. I regret that in the Netherlands it is  no longer allowed to breed the Boston Terrier because of its short nose. The breeders in the UK have the responsibility to keep this breed healthy. The RKC stated in its rules that: “In assessing dogs, judges should penalise any features of exaggerations which they consider would be detrimental to the soundness, health and well-being of the dog”. One can also read this in the breed standard. The breed standard is clear about wrinkles: they are not allowed. The muzzle should be relatively short and in my opinion the muzzle is too short when the dog has a wrinkle and this can affect the health. Some people told me after my judging that they did not like me not awarding more bitches in OB because of the wrinkles. When I judge dogs, it should be in the best interest of the breed according to the standard. Therefore I stay with my opinion. I thank my ring steward who did an excellent job.
