Thank you to the Committee for inviting me to undertake my first championship show appointment, at one of my favourite shows.  The hospitality received was second to none and I thorough enjoyed the whole experience. Special thanks must go to the exhibitors who entered on the day and showed such great sportsmanship and to my two stewards, John and Jess for keeping the ring running smoothly.

Primarily, I was looking for a beardie that could cover the ground with that long reaching movement, only enabled by the correct construction.  Balanced with a dog that was made with enough substance and bone to be overall fit for function.  I found a number of weak muzzles and underjaws and some exhibits lacking substance overall.  However, temperaments overall were excellent, as was pigment and coat quality and my final line ups, presenting some difficult decisions.

Class 2033 SBD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 5054 WRIGHT, Mrs Janis Agallaich Made For Mischief.   12 month light slate who took my eye on the stand, giving a balanced overall profile with an appealing breed type.  He is maturing as he should be for his age. Head developing well, with dark pigment and eye colour matching coat at this stage.  Typical beardie expression.  Good underjaw with correct bite.  Lovely front angulation, with long upper arm and depth of chest.  Liked his length to height ratios, with length of back coming from rib.  Excellent bend of stifle and hindquarters.  Very unsettled on the move due to searching out his owner, as I’m to understand this was his first show.  In profile he had a lovely length of stride and forward reach.  A little close behind going away but at this stage of his development, so to be forgiven.  He moved so much better for his owner competing for best Special Beginners, which I was pleased to award.  I do hope his owner will carry on. Best Special Beginners.
2nd: 5038 REYNOLDS, Mrs Joy & REYNOLDS, Mr Charlie Beabeardies Blue Velvet. 11 month old blue boy who is rangier in type.  It’s lovely to see this relationship in the ring blossom with his young handler.  He gives a clean profile on the stand and is in good coat, of correct texture and very well presented.  He still needs to mature in head and muzzle. Just lacking strength of both at the moment. He has the correct bite and good pigment with eyes matching coat, giving a soft expression.  Good overall length to height proportions particularly liked the length under his body and this comes from a well developed rib.  Would prefer better front angulation and slightly more lay back of shoulder.  He is developing in forechest.   Strong topline and correct bend of stifle with correct tail set.   He was unsettled on the move and can give his handler a hard time, he can be a little close behind and needs to strengthen in hock action – hopefully this will develop as he matures.

1st: 5029 MOGFORD, Mrs Nyree Gail & MOGFORD, Mr Mark Monarkshyre Autumnal.  Plainly marked dark slate, who immediately appealed.    He’s only 7 months old and at the bum high stage right now.  Good size and shape and no denying he’s a boy!  He has an exceptional head, with the darkest pigment and eye colour, giving a soft and gentle expression.  He carries the strength of muzzle and skull that the standard calls for.  Good depth of chest and front angulation.  Enough neck and okay shoulder placement.  Ribs well back and good rear angulation with strong hocks.  On the move he is steady, with a long reaching stride and good drive from behind.   He pushed the bitch hard for BPIB, he just needs time to settle in the ring and work with his handler.  One I will watch with interest.
2nd: 5009 DODGSON, Mrs L Wreckinroc Wonderland. 7 month slate, who appears quite mature on the stand, with a good quality, well-presented coat.  On closer inspection, he is very much a baby, his head needs to strengthen overall.  His pigment is strong with eyes matching coat, giving the correct expression. Balanced fore and aft.  Chest developing and good spring of rib.  Length of back coming from rib with short loin.   Would like a little more length of neck to complete his profile.  Excellent bend of stifle and strength of hock.  A little loose on the move today but this will come as he matures and comes together.

1st: 5000 CARTER, Miss J Memorylane Emotions In Motion For Ravenswyre (imp Fin).  13 months dark slate who I have admired from ringside throughout his puppy career.  He paints a nice profile on the stand and is balanced throughout.  He is mature in body, full of substance, with good bone.  Attractive head, with strength of muzzle, good underjaw, correct bite, moderate stop and broad skull.  He excels in front angulation, with excellent upper arm and depth of chest.  Good reach of neck and lay of shoulder.  His length comes from his rib, and he has a short strong loin. His rear angulation balances his front, which is well muscled.  He is presented in excellent condition.  On the move his construction allows him to reach out and drive from behind, with a lightness of foot.  I have no doubt this boy will go on to achieve his title and offers many qualities to our breed overall.  Delighted to award him RCC.
2nd: 5032 NOLAN, Miss Victoria Breaksea Flash Harry In Bricliath.  Slate 13-month boy, another with many qualities.  Very well presented, with excellent body fitting coat of quantity and quality for his age.  Liked his overall head balance but he still needs to strengthen in head and muzzle.  Good pigment and eye, with a gentle expression.  Lovely length of upper arm and depth of chest.  Good bone throughout with level topline and nice spring of rib with length of back coming from rib.  Short loin.  Would prefer slightly more length of neck and body at this stage.  Excellent rear angulation and strong hocks, well-muscled. The more he moved the steadier he became, with a lightness of foot as he went.

2nd: 4995 BROWN, Mrs Suzanne Highglade Reason To Believe.  2 year old substantial slate boy, who is going through the yearling coat change.  What he has in quality and texture is correct, it just needs time to finish.  He is mature throughout and excels in head type, which is lacking somewhat today.  He has strength of underjaw and muzzle, matching his broad skull.  Excellent pigment and eye colour, with a soulful expression.  Correct length to height proportions and length of leg.   Deep chest, good rib and straight topline.  I would prefer more front angulation, length of neck and lay of shoulder.  He was presented in hard muscular condition and sound temperament.  He couldn’t match 1 on suppleness of movement today.

Couldn’t match 1 on the day moving, would like to see more drive from behind. .

Class 2040 PGD (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 5013 GLASSPOOL, Mrs D & GRAY, Miss Alice Ungaro De Chester (Imp Fra) Taf.  2 year old dark slate.  Eye catching male, with good body proportions and I wasn’t disappointed when going over him.  He has a strong head, balanced throughout with no signs of weakness, correct bite and excellent pigment and eye colour, giving a soft expression.  Excels in depth of forechest and length of rib, which carries his strong straight topline, ending with a short strong loin.   Well angled upper arm and lovely well arched neck and shoulder placement.  Steady mover and well-handled to bring out his best. He pushed very hard for top honours, just preferred the drive from behind of my CC and RCC winners on the day.
2nd: 4999 BUTCHER, Miss Sara Sylvabrae Newtons Law.  Masculine blue boy who I have admired from the ringside.  There’s a lot to like about this boy, who is full of substance and no denying he’s a boy!  In full coat which is well textured and the deepest blue in colour.  He is very good in front, with a deep chest, lovely length of upper arm, correct length of neck and lay of shoulder.  Head well-proportioned and good strength of muzzle and underjaw.  Excellent length to height proportions overall.  He needs to settle on the move as he was a little erratic.  When he does there’s no reason why he can’t go far!

1st: 5030 MOIR, Mr Don Winaria Wellington JW.  3 year old, balanced throughout and gives a pleasing profile on the stand.  Correct head planes, with excellent pigment and a soft expression.  Mature in forechest, with good spring and length of rib with short loin.  Strong topline and tail set.   He excels in front angulation with an excellent reach of neck and well laid-back shoulders.  Rear angulation matches his front, and he is in good fit condition.  He couldn’t be matched on movement in this class, as his construction allowed him to move out with ground covering action, good drive from behind and with the lightness of foot.
2nd: 5014 HARCOURT-BROWN, Mrs B Orora's Himself.  2 year old eye catching brown who presents a nice clean profile on the stand.  On further inspection he has a classic head, well balanced with a good strength of muzzle.  Correct bite, moderate stop and nice broad skull.  Soft expression.  Mature in forechest, with pleasing front angulation.  Good reach of neck and lay back of shoulder.  Strong topline coming from length of rib and short strong loin.  Good bend of stifle and well-muscled.  Not as balanced on the move as 1 today, couldn’t match in drive and smooth rear action.

1st: 5018 JAY, Mr M J & JAY, Mrs E A & JAY, Miss L F Ch Farmarens Drums Of Spring At Talraz (imp Swe).  6 year old mature slate who I judged as a baby.   He takes the eye immediately on the stand, finer overall in type, he has a classic outline in profile.  Excels in length to height proportions overall with good leg length.  Super head, balanced with good pigment and dark eye, giving a soulful and intelligent expression.   Excellent depth of chest and spring of rib, which goes far back into a short strong loin, giving a super straight topline, which he held on the move.  Good length of neck into well laid-back shoulders and nice length of upper arm.  Rear angulation matching front with excellent muscled tone.  On the move he did give his handler some resistance, more so in the BOB challenge.  However, his qualities today couldn’t be denied, and I was pleased to award him the dog CC.
2nd: 5012 GILL, Mrs A & HOSIE, Mr A Ch Burnhock Superior Diamond For Gillaber.  6 year old mature brown of good size and shape.  He carries a masculine head, which is extremely well balanced, with strong pigment and soft expression.   Well angled front and back, with good upper arm angulation.  Little narrow in forechest and would prefer more layback of shoulder.  Super strong topline, coming from length of rib and good bend of stifle, well-muscled rear.  Well handled and well presented.  Moved okay, lacked the drive from behind to compete with 1 today.

1st: 5044 SAVAGE, Dr S & MCLEAN, Mr D Talraz Comic Relief At Canaich JW VW.  Hard to believe this plainly marked slate boy is 8 years old.  He is quite unexaggerated and has matured slowly and now at his prime I feel.  He has an excellent coat in correct quality and texture.  Liked his overall proportions with good length to height ratio.  Super head planes, very balanced with dark pigment and gentle expression.  Okay front angulation, would prefer more lay back of shoulder.  Deep and long rib and an exceptional topline for his age. Correct rear angulation.  Moved steady and true from all angles.  Best Veteran

1st: 5036 PEDDER, Mrs A Nobility Sent With Love To Caldermist (imp Deu).  Pretty feminine brown, who present a clean profile on the stand.  Excellent coat quality for her age, which enhances her overall outline.  She still needs to develop through, which she has plenty of time to do.  Sweet head and expression, eyes toning with coat.  Enough neck and front angulation.  Good length of rib and super topline. Balanced fore and aft.  Moved steady from every angle.  BPIB and lovely to watch her go Pastoral Puppy G4.
2nd: 4992 BROOKES, Mrs Lesley Anne Brookles Barkarole.  Liked the overall size and shape of this girl.  She gives a super profile on the stand.  Liked her overall length to height proportions with well developed forchest and well ribbed.  Lovely head and sweet expression.  Excellent pigment and eye colour.  Correct bend of stifle and good rear angulation.  She’s a little down on pasterns at the moment, hopefully this will change as she develops.  When settled she moved out as her construction allows.  Once she gets it together with handler and firms up as she grows, she should have some fun through her classes.

1st: 5047 SKINNER, Mrs Diane Valkyrie De Chester At Tamjenta (imp Fra) Jw.  Feminine slate girl, who I have watched with interest through her puppy career.  She is lighter in frame then my CC winner.  However, she is eye catching on the stand and her shape is very much ‘my type,’ with her lovely proportions, excellent length of neck and well laid-back shoulders.  She had one of the best front angulation and shoulders on the day, my hands just flowed over her.  Feminine balanced head, good length of rib and rear angulation.  She takes a while to get into her stride, as can be quite playful; but when she does, she has excellent reach and drive, with the lightness of foot. Delighted to award her RCC.
2nd: 5004 COOPER, Miss A R Tybury's Origin Of Hope.  Another I have watched from the ringside.  I liked this girl’s overall balance and substance.  She presents a lovely shape in profile and is blossoming as she’s moved through to Junior.  Pretty, feminine head with excellent pigment and eye colour.  Sweet expression.  Correct front, with good length of upper arm and lay back of shoulder.  She wasn’t as settled on the move in this class but settled through the classes and moves with plenty of reach and drive.  These two will change places as they progress.  Another I will watch with interest.

1st: 4983 BAKER, Miss M J & VAN DE HOEF, Miss Rianne Malandex Xpression Of Love. I have admired this young slate bitch from the ringside, who ultimately appeals to me for size and substance.  She’s feminine yet strong – a type we are sadly losing, and I was delighted to have the opportunity to get hands on today and she didn’t disappoint.  Her head is well balanced, super strength of muzzle, moderate stop and broad skull.  She has a soft, intelligent expression.  Well developed chest, which drops well down to her elbow.  Length of back coming from rib and super topline, which she keeps on the move at all times.  Moderate neck with enough layback of shoulder that allows her, combined with her excellent length of upper arm to move out with good reach.  She’s balanced front and back, with correct bend of stifle, well-muscled rear.  She moved out from all angles, and I couldn’t deny her the CC and BOB today! I was delighted to watch her in the group, where I felt she represented the breed extremely well.
