DRIFFIELD CHAMPIONSHIP DOG SHOW

Judges Critiques

Mr Michael MASTERS

Judging:

I was delighted to be invited to judge (bitches) my heart breed at this show. I was looking for typey, balanced, square exhibits that could move sound holding that all important level topline. I was not looking for exaggerated or long which is not what this breed should be. I was very pleased that I found what I was looking for in my winners and feel we have enough quality to keep this lovely breed as it should be.  We are the custodians of the future of the lovely cocker spaniel and please please please have the heart of the breed in everything you do. The depth of quality was in the Puppy and Limit classes today, where I could have awarded 8 or more cards.

Class 1794 SBB (12 Entries) Abs: 3
1st: 3860 PROUDLER, Miss M E Kimapa Kuromi Karrot

This feminine orange girl caught my eye as she entered the ring and didn't disappoint on handling. She is still a puppy so giving some maturity away but has lovely breed type and balance. I liked her very pretty head and eye with strong pigmentation. Her shoulders are well placed with matching upper arm, nice ribbing for her age to short loin and strong wide quarters. She moves away parallel with a strong driving action, holds it together in profile with firm top line. She just needs to tighten a little coming which I am sure she will do as she matures.
2nd: 3770 BRADBURY, Mr Anthony Kyna Crystal Clear

A blue girl of lovely breed type as you would expect from her breeding, her well proportioned head appeals greatly with kind expression. She is well made throughout with good balance, has correct body and moves sounds on the most beautiful neat feet. Handler just needs to practice the stacking to show off her front angulation a little better.

Class 1795 VB (7 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 3904 WEST, Mrs C A Sheigra Simply A Star JW ShCEx OSW VW

One that in  my opinion should have gained her title when in her prime. This black girl has a beautiful head and soulful expression, super front with depth to forechest. She has a well sprung rib cage extending well back to short loin, strong well muscled quarters with thickness to first and second thigh. She moves steady and sound holding a good shape in profile. BVB and BVIB with agreement of my co-judge and a super group shortlist.

2nd: 3801 FAIRBAIRN, Mrs J E & MADIGAN, Mrs Maria Misperros Sophia Loren

Another quality girl that has proved her worth in the whelping box. She is a beautiful type with lovely head and kind expression. She is well made in front with plenty of depth, She moves sound holding a firm topline, albeit not the drive of 1. To be critical I would prefer a slightly longer rib cage.

1st: 3912 WILLIAMS, Mr & Mrs R & S L Wilmerella Celtic Thistle

This pretty (naughty) orange stood out in this class, she is top end of minor puppy and mature compared to the other. She has a very pretty head and eye with rich pigmentation. She is well made in front with big ribs for her age, short in the loin, strong in the hind quarters and neat feet. She presents a balanced picture and holds it on the move.

2nd: 3814 HUTSON, Mrs S J Popebel Like Clockwork For Stobytill

I was suitably impressed with this fluffy blue roan puppy as she excels for type and cobbiness. She has an appealing head, strong front construction and plenty of depth for age. She has big ribs already and short in loin. She moves sound with correct width both ways. I am sure she will have fun.

Wow, what a class! The future is promising.
1st: 3828 MACLEAN, Miss J Lynwater Stars And Stripes

A new one to me and I fell for her hook line and sinker. She has the prettiest of heads and an expression that draws you in. She has a beautifully made front assembly with depth in spades. Her ribs are well sprung and extend well back to short loin, she has strong well muscled quarters and is short below the hock. She comes alive on the move, sound and covering the ground effortlessly. Just one problem, she isn't mine! BPB & BPIB with agreement of my co-judge. Delighted to watch her go Puppy Group 3

2nd: 3850 PEARCE-GUDGER, Mrs Gill Pearkim Phreckledy

Another quality puppy showing so much promise. She has a very pretty head of correct proportions, she flows from head to tail on handling, lovely front, big ribs and short loin. She is sound on the move with plenty of reach and drive.

1st: 3861 RAHMAN, Mr Md & TODD, Mr DC Chataway Vera

A black girl with plenty of breed type and substance. She has a pretty well balanced head and kind expression. She excels in front construction with plenty of depth, big ribs to short loin. She presents a striking shape in profile stacked and on the move she holds a firm top line with plenty of reach and drive.

2nd: 3890 TORBETT, Miss K Kirlinjis White Russian

I really liked this pretty black and white girl for her cobbiness, big ribs and wide rear end. She is beautifully balanced with correct angles and good height to length ratio. She moves sound but just needs more confidence and enthusiasm, she is still a puppy so hopefully she will blossom.

A super black girl with a feminine well balanced head and kind expression. She has  a well made front assembly with plenty of depth to brisket, big ribs extending to short loin and good width over the rear. She moved well with enthusiasm. I found her a tad overweight today for top honours.
2nd: 3778 COLLINGS, Mrs Amanda & COLLINGS, Mr Kevin Aylesmead Blu Rose At Colmandakev

A typey blue with good balance, she has a well sprung rib cage, short loin and strong quarters. She moved sound fore and aft but lacked some reach and drive.

Two girls here that were unplaced in an excellent puppy class

1st: 3831 MASON, Miss Jennifer Sandlauga Baileys On Ice

Although she was unplaced in a very strong puppy class, this blue and tan pup is very nice to handle and flows from head to tail. She has a pretty head and kind expression, her front is well developed with plenty of depth and ribs well sprung already. Her quarters are strong and wide and she moves sound covering the ground with ease. She is slightly longer cast than 2 but won this class on her steady movement. More attention to presentation would enhance the picture further.
2nd: 3757 BACON, Mrs K J Timbric Calamity Jane

A liver roan that I have admired from the ringside and was not disappointed when handling on the table, although I would like a little more fore face she has time to develop. She has a moderate well arched neck into strong front assembly, big ribs and short loin. I was disappointed when I was not able to assess her movement as she was VERY naughty. I know she is a puppy but you need to be able to see a couple of strides at least!

1st: 3842 MITCHELL, Mrs J E Glowhill Candy Corn

I have admired this super blue girl from a puppy and have watched her develop into adulthood, She appeals for breed type and balance with beautiful construction and correct width and depth all through. She is sound on the  move with plenty or reach and drive and in full coat. She is a bit weighty for me today for top honours but could not be denied this class. Her time will come I am sure.
2nd: 3780 COWLES, Mrs J & COWLES, Mr S Regaltav Valentine To Shenjela JW

A very cobby light blue with feminine head, shoulders laid well back with matching upper arm and plenty of depth. She has big ribs and short loin and muscles like iron which gave her strong sound hind action. To be critical I would like a little bit more of her all over.

I have always admired this blue girl for her breed type and balance, now we see the mature version. I love her balanced head piece and dark soulful eyes, she is moderate and pleasing to handle where nothing is exaggerated. Shes moves sound with reach and drive and covers the ground with ease. She is on top form with correct body and full coat sympathetically presented. One that should climb the ladder.
2nd: 3896 TORBETT, Miss K Kirlinjis Moonlight Jw

I swear this clever breeder has a mould as she consistently produces the same quality and type. Yet another blue girl that impressed me for her make, shape and balance, she moves sound. Not on top form as 1 today and I feel she could carry more condition to advantage.

A cracking class, some good girls having to go cardless.

1st: 3818 KETTLE, Miss Sue & KETTLE, Miss Annie Lujesa Laurellakes Angel Whisper

A black girl that has taken so long to mature. She is feminine with lovely expression, well muscled neck into fine well made front assembly with plenty of depth. She has now ribbed up which extends to short loin. She has wide well muscled quarters with lovely width over the rear. She kept it all together on the move, sound fore and aft with reach and drive in profile holding a firm top line. Pressed hard for top honours.
2nd: 3913 WOODS, Mr Neil Plaiglen Biker Babe To Helenwood JW

Another beautiful black of a different type to 1 that is maturing slowly but surely. She has a beautiful balanced head with kind expression. Her moderate neck leads to fine well laid shoulders with matching upper arm and good depth to brisket, She has good spring to her ribs extending well back to short strong loin. She has wide quarters which she used so well giving plenty of drive. She moves sound both ways and in profile holding a firm topline.  Another that should climb that ladder.

What a beauty! She is all cocker with all the attributes that I look for, she fits the breed standard so well and ticked all my boxes. Her head is just beautiful with work and chiselling that makes it classic, her eyes deep pools that you can get lost in. She has quality in abundance with everything in the right place in the right amounts, just fitting seamlessly into the next and your hands just flow over her from head to tail. On the move she is sound and full of personality with that naughty twinkle in her eye when coming towards you and plenty of that cocker bustle when going. She was at the top of her game today and could not be denied the top spot. Bitch CC and BOB with the agreement of my co-judge. A sterling performance in the big ring, Group 4 was the icing on the cake.
2nd: 3875 SHINKFIELD, Mrs Sue & LESTER, Mrs Penny Quettadene Queen Of Stars JW

This black is delightful to handle, she has a beautiful head and deep soulful expression. My hands just flowed over her from head to tail with nothing exaggerated, not over or under done in any way. She is well made with plenty of depth and correct width. I would like to see her a tad showier with her mind more on the job in hand. Another that needs to be handled to be appreciated. Delighted to award her the RCC today, well deserved.
