I had my first Shih-Tzu in 1980, I first judged the breed in 1987 at Newport (Gwent) Open Show.  My first CC appointment was in 2002.  Ive done a long apprenticeship in this breed awarding CC’s some 9 times and am very proud to have been invited to judge at Crufts in 2029.  I was lucky enough to have known true Doyen’s of the Breed : Audrey Dadds, Ken & Betty Rawlings, Les & Betty Williams, Michael & Dee Harper, Ellen Johnson, Josephine Johnson, Pat Lord, Pat Maule, Susan & David Crossley, Marjorie Devine, Elaine McDonald - many who are no longer with us and some who are mercifully still above ground. I just want to pay tribute to these people who have shaped and preserved our breed for us and the future. Apologies for not mentioning everyone Ive just stated those who come immediately to mind.

Judging the breed today I noticed that there is an improvement with presentation and cleanliness overall for dogs & handlers, I never liked it when folk wore their grooming aprons in the ring, not smart at all!  Before you say it I am obviously aware we are here to judge the dogs, but I don’t want to see or smell hairy aprons in my ring!

There used to be these strange uber short legged extra long caterpillar type dogs with a thicker curly coat around and im pleased to report that I didn’t encounter 1 of these.  There were no horseshoe mouths of yesteryear for which I am hugely relieved. There were a few staggered teeth in lower jaws ie 3 in front and 2 behind which Im not wildly keen on ide prefer full dentition but a Shih-Tzu doesn’t walk on its mouth and you have to weigh up the whole picture. A few dogs were a bit chubby and a few were a bit slim, but it seems to me that’s down to lifestyle and feeds. Also if theres a bitch in season a dog will fret and not eat.

Altogether a positive satisfying day. Thank you for your confidence in me to handle your prize little people and I am pleased that the breed is still in good caring hands.

Stunning black 10 yrs, in his youth I recall awarding him RDCC, he still has plenty of style charm and pazazz, mature expressive dark round eye, long leather ears, strong jaw, sturdy frame being slightly longer than high, broad chest and good spring of rib, he floated around the ring with tail gaily on high looking like he could go on and on.  Hes very impressive, delighted to award him Best Veteran in Breed.

8.5 mths quality promising baby gold/white beautifully prepared coat, he has a white shawl, desirable blaze on forehead, sturdy body is slightly longer than high, nose is slightly tip tilted, jaws slightly undershot, has everything im looking for today including his free sound movement showing plenty of rear pad, full of character he loves to show off.  Pleased to award him Best Puppy Dog & Best Puppy In Breed.  Thrilled that he was awarded Utility Puppy Group 4.

9 mths exuberant outgoing personality plus, gorgeous double black coat and little white beard.  Lovely firm jaw with slightly undershot level dentition, nice broad skull, cheeky dark round eye, retains level topline on move, is sound each way shows plenty of rear pad, a contender for best puppy pushing hard in challenge, he is gorgeous.

Pleased to award him RDCC.

12 mths flashy back/white, has lovely expressive fore face and desirable white blaze, clean white shaw, body is slighty longer than high with high tail set. Moved well. Like to see a tad more weight on him.

Shapely slightly longer than high retains level topline on move, is sound fore & aft shows plenty of rear pads. Acquitted himself well in the line up.

5 yrs quaity red/white the colour so deep it caught my eye to have almost a rich purple undertone in the sunlight, I stood back to admire this stunning dog he has enough double full coat with desirable markings white blaze, clean white shawl, white tail tip, his tail set is high and reaches the top of his head when stood like a ship in full sail when he floated around the ring on big feet showing plenty of pad, areal character, hes in great condition has dark round keen eyes, long leather ears that start just below the crown, his neck is nicely arched, he just gave me chills and I absolutely adored him.  I was delighted to award him the DCC & BOB, was further thrilled to discover this is his 3rd and Crowing CC.

SIXTEEN YEARS OLD, the most adorable gold white with a sweet expression round dark eye, gorgeous arch of neck and high tail giving a breedy outline, she loves to show off and is devoted to her handler. Her handler tells me this will be her swan song as she is retiring.  Such a wonderful old lady in full coat and full of pazazz, its very rare to see an elderly coated dog able to be shown like this.  Full marks to her owner too for all the love and care.

One to watch.

13 mths another quality girl, elegant paler gold/white with big white shawl and white tail, compact frame, adorable dark round eyes and tip tilted nose, she has plenty of desirable breed traits, I went with the maturity of 1 today.  But she is also one to watch.

2 yrs delicate femme gold/white with the most adorable round wide set dark kind eye, devoted to her handler she shows and shows, I stood back to admire her breedy silhouette assisted by her proud arch of neck and high t/pot tail, she has the most glamorous well presented thick double coat that moves around her like a ship in full sail when she effortlessly parades herself around the ring, so many desirable breed traits and qualities include her broad skull, wide mouth slightly undershot, black pigments around eyes nose, flews, wide nostrils giving plenty of heart & lung room, a sturdy well knit frame with good spring of rib, a jaunty character full of herself and really enjoying to move and show with plenty of rear pad.  Delighted to award her Bitch CC, and thrilled to be told it was her 3rd and Crowing Glory.

A great size not big not small shes just right.  Pushed very hard in the challenge.
