Judging: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Toy Group

I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge at this well-run show and to the exhibitors for the high-quality entry. Also, to my wonderful stewards, who kept the ring moving swiftly all day. I very much enjoyed my day and was delighted with my main winners, all of whom are true toy spaniels. 

Class 463 VD (4 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 1404 NICHOL, Mrs C Chantismere Finnegan, Well marked blen, nice & compact of a good size and shape. Masculine head with large dark eyes and ears set high. Short plush muzzle and shallow stop. Good to go over with everything flowing into neatly into place. Well bodied and holding a good topline at all times. Moved out very well for his handler with good reach and drive and clearly loved his time in the ring.

2nd: 1407 RENAUD, Mrs Ellen Ellenaud Oliver Twist another lovely boy who was clearly enjoying every minute of his time in the ring. Nice head and expression, good eyes and ears, with a lovely expression. Good bone and substance, nice neck and shoulders and a pleasing overall outline. A little bigger than my 1st today and carried his tail a little high, but lots to like in this lovely old boy. Moved well for his age and showed himself with plenty of enthusiasm.

Class 464 MPD (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1422 SPALL, Mr M & CLARK, MR MATTHEW Llapsttam Philanderer, 6-month-old Blen baby at his first show, as expected he is still rather raw but he presents a lovely shape when standing and is ideal for size. Well made, with good body and substance. Head and expression still need time to develop, but at only 6 months there is plenty of growing and maturing to do. Very sound on the move and with a little more confidence will look a picture in profile. A promising puppy who I am sure will have a lovely future ahead. 

Class 465 PD (8 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1425 WILKINS, Mr Connor & WILCOCK, Mr Kieran Tebaldi Bohemian Rhapsody, Lovely rich red Ruby dog who is really starting to come into his own now and maturing nicely. Still plenty of time for him to develop, but he is certainly going in the right direction. Lovely head and expression with good dark eyes and gentle expression. Good to go over.  Really liked his outline and shape, with a lovely overall balance and nice amount of leg under him. Particularly liked him in profile on the move, where he showed himself very well with good reach and drive and a nice steady topline with good head and tail carriage. Pleased to award him BPD.

2nd: 1405 NOLAN, Mrs Jennifer Jernito King Of Hearts well presented Blen in lovely coat and condition. Lovely make and shape when standing with a good overall outline. Sweet head and expression, still needs more time to develop in head and gain some fill under the eyes. Well bodied, with good substance and enough bone. Not the front angulation or depth of chest as my winner but he is well ribbed and has enough rear angulation. Level topline and correct tail set. Moved out well, with a lovely profile action. 

3rd: 1392 LAKHANI, Mrs Janet Anne & LAKHANI, Mr A Emberlace Harry

Class 466 JD (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1423 VORDERSTRASSE, Mr Klaus Arrowbien Clark Gable gorgeous well broken Blen, full of quality and excellent breed type, who is a lovely size and shape. Excellent head of the correct proportions and a soft gentle expression coming from large, lustrous dark eyes. Good length of neck leading into well placed shoulders, good topline with tail set correctly off his back and plenty of bone and substance. Beautiful outline standing with a lovely silky coat which was well presented. Moved well and showed plenty of reach and drive and very sound coming and going.  A very promising young dog with so much to like and he was the dog to beat however, in the final challenge he just wasn’t quite as settled on the move as my CC winner, which was the only thing that separated them today. Delighted to award him the RCC, a very worthy winner and I’m sure he will have a bright future.

2nd: 1375 GILBERT, Miss Carol L Ouzlewell's Ron Weasley At Gryffingil, this well broken Blen dog is larger mould than 1 but is well balanced. Masculine head, with large dark eyes. Ears high set with plenty of feathering for his age. Good neck and shoulder placement with nice depth to chest and moderately boned forelegs. Well sprung ribs set back into a short loin. Level topline held well at all times. Well-turned stifle with good muscle to hindquarters. Tail set on well and used to advantage. Made a nice picture when standing displaying the correct cavalier temperament. Moved out well and soundly.

3rd: 1377 HAMILTON & HOGG, Mrs & Mr Fiona And Douglas Mariposa Cavalier's Pico Bello At Hamhoggs (Imp Pol)

Class 467 YD (4 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1411 RIX, Mr B Ricksbury Roosevelt JW, Very nice blen dog with lots to like from head to toe with a lovely overall outline. Lovely head and expression, good dark eyes and well-set ears, giving him a lovely soft expression. Good neck leading into well placed shoulders and a good topline and tail set. Good bone and substance. Good hindquarters with plenty of muscle tone. Super colour with rich chestnut markings.

Moved well in profile with good reach and drive, although I would like him a little tidier in front coming towards me, but he is very sound going away. One I considered highly today and shortlisted him into my final 4 for the DCC. Champion quality for sure and if he just put a little more into his showing, I am sure he’d easily pick up the CC’s.

2nd: 1420 SPALL, Mr M & CLARK, MR MATTHEW Ch Llapsttam Luther Vandross JW, Mr Glamour boy! Very smart Ruby dog, presented and put down to perfection with a wealth of silky, straight coat. Lovely size just a fraction longer in back than I prefer. Nicely shaped masculine head with good cushioning to muzzle. Super, large round dark eyes, full of expression. High set, well feathered ears. Decent length of neck leading into well placed shoulders. Good depth of chest and well boned forelegs. Well sprung ribs. Well angulated behind with good muscle tone. Moves out well and soundly just tends to be a little proud of his tail. 

3rd: 1374 GILBERT, Miss Carol L Ouzlewell's Harry Potter At Gryffingil

Class 468 ND (5 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1383 HOOD, Dr M & Mr P Alsidewood Imitation, larger sized B/T dog with rich tan markings. He was very much full of life today and gave his owner a bit of a hard time. Good head and lovely large dark eyes. Well feathered dark ears framing his head nicely. Well put together, with everything flowing into place. Well boned forelegs and correct round feet. Muscled hindquarters. A little erratic on the move today but once settled could see he was sound both coming and going. Presented beautifully. 

2nd: 1393 LEAVER & GRESTY, Mrs & Miss Anne & Tara Revaelann Rocky Road, richly marked Blen with a good shape and outline. Reasonably good head with large dark eyes and well set ears. Decent to go over, with good lay of shoulder and enough depth of chest. Well sprung ribs and good short loin. Table top topline with tail set bang off. Well muscled hindquarters which allowed him to move out well and soundly.

3rd: 1376 GILBERT, Miss Carol L Queenslake Quinn At Gryffingil

Class 469 GD (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1360 CALLAGHAN, Miss Louise & TODD, Mr Lee Callyspride Cedric JW, another 1st class dog, who greatly appealed today, slightly heavier marked Blen that is perfect for size and shape. Super head with dark, round eyes, that could be slightly bigger. Flattish skull between high set ears, feathered beautifully. Good neck and shoulders, with correct depth to chest and well boned forelegs. Well sprung ribs and short loin. Level topline and correctly set tail. Moves out positively with some drive. Presented and handled to perfection

2nd: 1377 HAMILTON & HOGG, Mrs & Mr Fiona And Douglas Mariposa Cavalier's Pico Bello At Hamhoggs (Imp Pol), slightly bigger mould than my winner but one who presents a well-balanced outline standing. Handsome head with large dark eyes and well-set ears. Decent to go over, with good lay of shoulder and good depth of chest. Well sprung ribs and good short loin. Well-muscled hindquarters which allowed him to move out well and soundly. Presented and handled to advantage by his owner.

3rd: 1382 HOOD, Dr M & Mr P Rabymar New York AW(B)

Class 471 LD (4 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1413 SEARLE, Mrs D Stonepit Into The Blue, absolutely gorgeous 2 year old Blen who really caught my eye today. Beautiful head and expression, with lovely dark, round eyes and that soft, gentle Cavalier expression that is so desirable. Ears high set with plenty of feathering, framing his face perfectly. Excellent overall balance and type, with good bone and substance and a lovely outline. Super neck and shoulders, good topline & tail set and pleasing rear angulation with good muscle tone. He is a beautiful rich chestnut colour and presented superbly in a wealth of quality silky coat. He moved extremely well, with good reach and drive being ever so sound, and showed himself beautifully both ways and in profile.

For me, he had that little bit extra today, an overall quality that really stood out and I could not get past him. The epitome of a toy spaniel, he was a pleasure to judge, and I was delighted to award him a very worthy the CC and BOB. He is every inch a Champion and I hope his title is not to far away. 

2nd: 1408 RHODES, Mrs Catherine & RHODES, Mr Andrew & RHODES Calonlan Zeus JW, Quality heavily marked tricolour of lovely breed type who presented a lovely outline with good balance when standing. Beautiful head and expression, lovely dark eyes and correct high set ears. Excellent neck and shoulders, good topline and hindquarters, with nice feet and excellently presented coat with plenty of feathering.

Moved well with good reach and drive when settled and has a lovely overall outline. Lots to admire and a dog I really liked. Just not quite as settled today as my winner, which made the difference on the day, but a lovely dog and I am sure his title is not far away. 

3rd: 1374 GILBERT, Miss Carol L Ouzlewell's Harry Potter At Gryffingil

Class 472 OD (4 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1399 LOVEL, Mr P Ch Lovetrac Banksy Lovely quality, well broken blen dog who I have always admired from the side of the ring. Super size, small and compact, with a lovely outline and good balance. Attractive head and expression with large dark eyes, however I would like a little more fill under the eye and preferred the plushness in head of my two main winners. Very well made, with good neck and shoulders, excellent topline and tail set and super bone and substance. Every inch the show man and moved out very well, holding a super outline in profile, although I preferred the rear movement of my CC and RCC winners today which is what tipped the scales. Presented in 1st class order and handled to advantage. 

2nd: 1391 KOTANI, Miss Miyuki & CONLON, Mrs Catherine Ir Ch Rathbrist Rewrite The Stars, another high-quality Blen dog and it really was a case of splitting hairs between these two today. A little larger than my winner but he has a beautiful outline with a wealth of silky coat presented to absolute perfection. Super head and eye with a lovely gentle expression. Well very made with good angulation fore and aft. Correct level topline and tail set well off his back. He is very sound on the move but today wasn’t holding his outline in profile as well as the winner and carried his tail slightly too high which swayed my decision, but it was a very close call. Another who is a very worthy champion and I was delighted for his owners to see he won his 3rd and crowning CC at the adjoining Club Show later in the day.

3rd: 1410 RIX, Mr B Ricksbury Elite JW

 

Class 473 VB (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1363 COLAVECCHIA, Miss M Carolus Miss Elsie VW, delectable little Blen girl that belies her years. Such a neat, compact little shape. Most gorgeous head and expression with large, lustrous eyes, so full of expression, you could look at them all day. Excellent neck and shoulders, so well bodied, with good spring of rib and depth of chest. Topline level and tail set bang off. Moved out well with good drive and very soundly. She has the most perfect cavalier temperament and never stopped showing. I very much considered her today for top honours but unfortunately had to give away to the ‘youthfulness’ of my main winners but she is one I would happily sign a CC for, and I do hope one day she will wear the crown that she fully deserves. 

Class 474 MPB (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1416 SMITH, Mr Mark Aranel Cherish, what a little poppet! Such a promising young baby, with a beautiful, neat shape and excellent balance. Super head, perfectly marked, that still have plenty of time to develop. The most gorgeous lustrous, large round eyes, that are full of expression. High set ears framing her correctly shaped head perfectly. Excellent length of neck leading into well placed shoulders. So well bodied for her age, with a good spring of rib and excellent depth to chest. Correct short loin. Well boned forelegs. Well angulated behind with enough muscle for her age. She still needs a little more confidence on the move, but once she got going, she is very sound. I am sure she will have a rosy future. 

2nd: 1372 GEORGE-EVANS, Mrs Lynn Toraylac Honey Hue At Jorgealin another quality blen puppy with a good outline and balance. Pretty head and expression with large, round dark eyes. Good to go over with just enough bone and good substance. Excellent topline and tail set. Needs a little more practice on the move but she is sound and shows good promise. 

Class 475 PB (8 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1421 SPALL, Mr M & CLARK, MR MATTHEW Llapsttam Martha, Smart B/T bitch presented in with a lovely raven black jacket and bright tan markings and of a super silky texture. A little larger than I usually prefer but she is well balanced and has a compact outline when standing. Feminine head with enough fill below her dark expressive eyes. Shallow stop and correct almost flat skull. Good length of neck with slight arch and well laid shoulders. Well sprung ribs and short loin. Well-turned stifle and good muscle tone. Moved out confidently and with style and very sound. Pleased to award her BPIB and later see her go PG3. 

2nd: 1384 INGLIS, Mrs N & INGLIS, Mr Gordon Verheyen Coral At Craigowl at first glance I thought this Ruby was going to top the class with her beautiful outline and classic shape. She has a correctly shaped head of the correct proportions with dark, round eyes but they could be a fraction bigger, and her nose pigment could be slightly better. Correctly set high set ears which frame her head nicely. To go over, she is really lovely and hard to fault. She moved out very soundly with a super profile action. Today I just preferred the expression of the winner but I have no doubt they will be changing places in the future. 

3rd: 1361 CHADWICK, Miss Leah Ellemich Love Bomb At Chadlia

Class 476 JB (5 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1381 HOGAN, Ms Maryann Arrowbien Grace Kelly For Stavonga Beautifully marked Blen bitch that presents a lovely shape when standing. Prettiest of heads with the most gorgeous, dark expressive eyes. Correctly high set ears, framing her head nicely. So good to go over, all of a piece. Super front, lovely shoulders and chest, well boned and nice feet. Lovely ribbing and loin, firm backline and neat underline. Well angulated in rear, and lovely muscle over her quarters. Level topline with her tail set right off. Moved out well and soundly. Perfect cavalier temperament. Very similar in quality and type to her RCC winning brother. In my final 4 for the CC. 

2nd: 1394 LEAVER & GRESTY, Mrs & Miss Anne & Tara Revaelann Gift From Heaven well broken tri bitch. Ideal for size and shape and so well balanced. Very sweet head of a good shape, with large expressive eyes and good pigment. Ears set high with good feathering framing her head nicely. Good length of neck leading into well placed shoulders. Well boned forelegs with good feet. Well sprung ribs, short loin and firm topline with tail set correctly. Well angulated hindquarters, used well on the move driving off from her hocks. Could do with some more coat to complete the picture.

3rd: 1427 WOOD, Mrs L & Mr R Llapsttam Epic Gail

Class 477 YB (5 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 1358 BRAGG, Miss Lesley Anjomil Nightingale At Cavalicious quality compact blen bitch of a good size & shape. Very pretty head with large dark eyes and ears set high. So nice to go over with everything flowing into place. Well bodied and holding a good topline at all times. Moved out very well and soundly. Presented and handled to advantage. Easy winner of this class. 

2nd: 1365 COLLIER, Miss S Finezja Goldmax Baltic Under Cavohana (Imp Pol) larger blen bitch all through that today was carrying far too much weight. She is well balanced, with a compact body. Well broken, with rich chestnut markings. Moved out soundly, having a good profile action with a good topline and tail set. 

3rd: 1369 FEETHAM, Mrs Alison Cloudy Mist At Lioara

 

Class 478 NB (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1362 CHADWICK, Miss Leah & CHAPMAN, Mrs Michelle & IREL Ellemich Infatuation At Chadlia, really loved this little Blen bitch standing, super for size and shape. Excellent head, well cushioned muzzle, dark lustrous eyes with good fill beneath. Lovely to go over, with everything neatly flowing into place. Good chest and well sprung ribs. Well angulated rear with nicely let down hocks. Moved out with a good profile action, just a touch wide when coming towards. A clear winner here today.

2nd: 1380 HOBBS, Miss R S & HEWITT, Miss C & HEWITT, Mrs B Gorska Finezja another well broken blen of 11 months. A touch heavier all through for me but she has a good shape and a well balanced outline. She is good to go over, with a nice neck and good depth of chest. Correct topline and tail set. Won her place in this class due to her accuracy in movement up and back and a good profile action. 

3rd: 1426 WOOD, Mrs L & Mr R Spindlepoint Desdemona

1st: 1381 HOGAN, Ms Maryann Arrowbien Grace Kelly For Stavonga, winner of Junior. 

2nd: 1378 HAMILTON & HOGG, Mrs & Mr Fiona And Douglas Invincible Angel Magic Oak At Hamhoggs Jw (Imp Pol) Nice compact blen bitch of a good size. Prettiest of heads with large dark eyes and ears set high. So nice to go over with everything flowing into place. Well bodied and always holding a good topline. Moved out well and soundly. 

3rd: 1396 LEE, Mr R & Mrs K Kelrick Flower Power

 

Class 480 PGB (5 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 1385 JARAMILLO, Miss Rebecca Conabec Causing Chaos, beautifully marked Blen of ideal size and shape. Super head and large dark, expressive eyes with a good amount of fill beneath. Good cushioning to her muzzle. High set ears and almost flat skull. Good length of neck leading into well placed shoulders. Good depth of chest and well sprung ribs. Firm topline held level at all times. Well angulated hindquarters. Moved out well and soundly.

2nd: 1390 KNIGHT, Mrs Christine Carolus Miss Chloe, well marked blen bitch, slightly bigger mould than my winner but a lovely make and shape. Lovely head and expression, good dark eyes giving a gentle expression. Well made with good body and substance. Moved out well & very soundly. Handled to advantage.

3rd: 1370 FOX, Mrs Lynn Patricia Brymarden Scarlet For Lynmily

Class 481 LB (11 Entries) Abs: 3
1st: 1412 SEARLE, Mrs D Stonepit Dominique litter sister to my DCC winner and another star out of the top drawer. I absolutely loved this girl and could find so little to fault. Beautiful head and expression, lovely, lustrous, dark eyes giving the gentlest expression with nice fill underneath. Gorgeous overall shape & outline. Small, neat and so very pretty, with lovely bone & substance. Moved really well and showed herself wonderfully. She has so many of the qualities I look for and was a real pleasure to go over.

In the end it came down to the smallest of details, with me just preferring the richer colour of my BCC winner. Delighted to award her the RBCC. Another very special girl who I’m sure will have many more good days ahead and a certain champion for sure. 

2nd: 1379 HAZELTINE, Mrs J P Juzandia Relight My Fire, Very pretty Ruby with a lot to like. Super make and shape and so well balanced when standing. Very feminine head of the correct shape, large dark eyes with a melting expression. So lovely to go over, with good bone and depth and excellent spring of rib. Firm topline held well with her tail set correctly off her back. Moved out with style with an excellent profile and sound both ways, just tended to be a little proud of her tail today. A confident little show girl who I considered very highly today and made for a difficult decision between 1 & 2, one I would be happy to sign a CC for. 

3rd: 1419 SPALL, Mr M & CLARK, MR MATTHEW Llapsttam's Vanessa

Class 482 OB (7 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 1366 COX, Mrs T Emberlace Christina, such a beautiful little well broken Blen bitch, a small, neat package and everything I love & look for in a Cavalier. Gorgeous head and expression, lovely dark eyes and that soft, gentle look I so adore. Well set ears, framing her face nicely. Lovely neck and shoulders, super topline & tail set. Plenty of bone and substance for her size. She moved out beautifully and showed herself off really well, with a super profile action and very sound coming and going.  A little out of coat today but she has absolutely nothing to hide. One I instantly fell for, and she was a joy to go over. She has that lovely combination of quality, elegance and sweetness that I look for. Delighted to award her the BCC her 2nd and even more thrilled to see her gain her crown, not an hour later and the Club Ch Show held in conjunction with Darlington, what a wonderful day for her & her breeder/owner, many congratulations! A very special little girl and a thoroughly deserved winner.

2nd: 1417 SMITH, Mrs S Ch Beaudale Little Bit Naughty, lovely Ruby who I have always admired and a real quality girl. Beautiful head and expression, lovely dark eyes with just enough fill. High set ears, with an almost flat skull and framing her face nicely. Super shape and outline and very good to go over. Presented in a lovely rich red jacket. Super profile when moving, with a lovely head and tail carriage. Today, she would insist on standing with a sloping topline which was the deciding factor but a beautiful bitch, another that I would happily sign a CC for and one to be very proud of. 

3rd: 1424 WILKINS, Mr Connor & WILCOCK, Mr Kieran Llapsttam Four Tea Love At Tebaldi JW
