"I'd like to reflect on a truly enjoyable year judging Irish Red & White Setters. I recently returned from the Canadian National in Toronto, a truly rewarding experience. A few months prior, I judged the Dutch club show, where I saw a healthy entry of 21 IRWS. While it's unfair to directly compare judging systems and breeding approaches across countries, I've observed a concerning lack of quality depth within our breed. In Canada, I noticed a greater depth of quality, with success spread across multiple kennels. This suggests a more collaborative breeding approach, with breeders working together to improve the breed.
Our biggest challenge lies in the limited gene pool, exacerbated by a declining number of breeders. This issue isn't unique to our breed; many others face similar challenges. Perhaps we can learn from the Canadian experience. While their system isn't perfect, their collaborative efforts demonstrate a proactive approach to ensuring the breed's future. We must be mindful of this and consider similar strategies to maintain quality depth within the Irish Red & White Setter."

1st: Ward’s Sh Ch Cornadore Argyle With Copperwhite. In full bloom and maturity, but that’s how it should be. Good broad head with domed skull, and a defined stop, plenty of fore face looking fairly square. With round eye and some work under the eye, ear set level with the eye. A well made front assembly, with straight forearm and good bone and feet. A good depth of brisket with correct spring of rib and fore chest. Level topline into a well made rear, well muscled and drives out. Keeps a balanced picture in profile movement.

1st: Ward’s Roanjora Cremant De Lux Copperwhite. I preferred the overall balance, substance and movement to win this class. A masculine head with a broad domed skull, nice kind eye and expression, defined stop and correctly set ear. Needs to break a little but should come with age. A straight forearm with good bone and feet. A fore chest and brisket to the elbow. Well ribbed back and a good strong loin, good rear angulation and well conditioned, clean colour.
2nd: Mcdonald & Westwood & West’s Roanjora Cremant De Savoie Avec Eusanit. Pleasing head and expression, broad domed skull, nice eye and correctly set ear. Clean neck and shoulder, level topline and well ribbed back. Tends to rise a little over the rear. Like a little more rear angulation. Movement was true both ways.
3rd: Martin & Green’s Rhowendale Game Is On Again For Viszaset (imp Fin)

1st: Heslop’s Klarnein Lake Side By Bonisla. Lighter in type and is at that age where maturity will only help to get some substance. A pleasing head and gentle Red and White expression. A slightly arched long neck into good lay of shoulder. With straight forearm and good forechest. Good depth of brisket and well ribbed back, level topline with correct tailset good clear colouration. Would like a little more rear angulation. Covered the ground well.

1st: 2621 Mapletoft’s Roanjora Tanqueray. This dog has matured well with a typical R&W head. Broad skull, with well set eye and correctly set ear of moderate length. Square muzzle and a soft expression. Plenty of substance to him with a good forechest into a straight forearm and good pastern and correct feet and bone. I’d like a slightly better return of upper arm to get the shoulder back a bit more. A good spring of rib and well back with a good depth of brisket. Strong loin with a level topline and correctly set tail. Well let down hock but I’d like a little more bend of stifle, well conditioned. A little unruly on the move liking to head off in a different direction to his handler. But a lot better than he used to be.

1st: Catton & Cook’s Daithi Shadow Dog With Ferngate (imp Pol). A interesting class to judge today with a few different types. I remember judging this boy when he was in post grad at Richmond back in 21 and thinking he need to mature and fill in the middle as he seemed to be at odds with himself from front end to back end. Well he certainly has matured well and got that middle bit he needed. I preferred his cleaner neck and shoulder to 1st his he has fully matured now with a good broad domed skull without coarseness or cloddyness, good round eye with plenty of work under it and a good square muzzle. Correctly set ear. Powerful slightly arch neck into a clean forehand. Straight forearm with good bone and feet. Well ribbed with a good spring and depth of brisket, a well made rear with good angulation and well let down with some muscle. And this really showed on the move, driving with some purpose and converting the ground. I would ideally like a slightly shorter loin. He lost out for BOB on finishing condition to his coat.
2nd: Gardner’s Sh Ch Alanea Game Reserve With Danwish. Another different type in full bloom now. He’s a good make and shape and well balanced, good head piece with plenty of work in it, good length to it and balanced with a defined stop, a really kind expression with a good round eye and correct ear set and length. I would like a better lay of shoulder which at times can make his topline look sloping but on the move it flows and is level. A good forechest and straight forearm with good bone and round feet. Well sprung rib and a good strong loin into a well made rear with good angulation and let down hock. Well conditioned and he moves with some drive and he certainly knows his trade.
3rd: Tattersall’s Sh Ch Alanea Mirror Image

1st: Jarvis’ Settersay Targaryen Lowdon. A lovely gentle expression with a round eye and soft look about her. Feminine head without coarseness. Well set ear and balanced proportions. A good front assembly with straight forearm and bone and feet. Well sprung rib and well back and well bodied for her tender age. Good lol let topline and correctly set tail. Moved with ease both ways.

1st: Mcdonald’s Roanjora Cremant D'alsace JW. A pretty feminine bitch with a kind expression. Nice eye and broad skull and well set ear on a level with the eye. A good square muzzle and defined stop and all in proportion. Gone bone and feet with a straight forearm, well sprung rib and well back into a well filled loin, well made rear end and good angulation. It was nice to see that typical setter tail lashing on the move. She certainly covers the ground with ease and kept a balanced picture in profile.

1st: Tattersall’s Alanea Silhouette. The prettiest of heads well balanced, kind eye with that typical melting R&W expression, square muzzle with a defined stops, plenty of work under the eye. Broad domed skull, ear set level with the eye. Good neck with slight crest. Straight forearm and well boned with good close knit feet. A balance make and shape with good spring of rib and well bodied. Well made rear and shows this on the move away. Not so positive coming toward you, I’d like a little more extension. Good colour and clear pearly white.

1st: GARDNER’s Sh Ch Charnborough Charisma Of Danwish JW. A quality bitch with lots to like. A real show girl and knows what to do. In full bloom with a clear coat and good rich colour. Pretty head and expression, well balanced with a defined stop, round dark eye. Clean forehand with no throatiness and slight arch into neck, into a good lay of shoulder. Plenty of forechest with straight forearm and good bone. Well sprung rib and strong loin, level topline in a well made and conditioned rear construction. Nothing exaggerated throughout. Moved away with some drive and kept those flowing lines in side profile with some reach and drive.
