CITY OF BIRMINGHAM CANINE ASSOCIATIONMrs Lisa REID
Judging: Hound Group, Rhodesian Ridgeback
I'd like to thank the Officers & Committee for the kind invitation, what a lovely show it was. We were afforded a fabulously large, carpeted ring with plenty of space ringside too. There was a great atmosphere and good lighting in the halls which definitely made a difference. Thank you to my excellent stewards, Roger and Kay who kept the classes flowing and did a fantastic job which I really appreciated!
The overall quality was excellent across many different types, and good dogs went without place cards in the larger classes - Junior Dog, and both limit classes were especially difficult. I could have given out a good few more green cards on the day also, which is a nice problem to have as a judge. I found that ridges were all acceptable, most good with just a handful of off-set crowns among the entry, dentition was good with only a couple of less than perfect scissor bites so I won't mention these individually. Coat colours were mostly wheaten or red wheaten, with some being a shade darker red than ideal but all had the agouti pattern on inspection. Some dogs seemed to find the hall a bit noisy which affected their performance, and others didn't move as expected on the day which affected placings. Temperaments were excellent in the main, with a couple of shy younger exhibits who will hopefully grow in confidence as they mature.
I was looking for Ridgebacks who fulfil the standard and believe I found that in my winners. Standard size, powerful and heavy in bone, deep chested and balanced with good angulation both front and rear as the standard asks for while without being exaggerated in any way. I looked for hounds who reached from the shoulder and covered the most ground with the least amount of effort, while driving from the rear in equal measure in long, low strides.
A good Ridgeback is a fine balance between power and elegance, and a joy to watch on the move. Proportions are so important in this hound breed - depth of chest should equal leg length meeting at the elbow, some exhibits are tall and longer in the leg giving a sighthound look, and lacking depth of chest - therefore shorter in body length than they are tall which isn't correct for this breed. That said, I found most proportions to be good on the day and certainly in my winners.
Thank you to all exhibitors for the honour of judging your wonderful hounds, I had a super day.

2 year-old mature and shapely red wheaten boy, well off for bone, knuckled feet, good head of nice proportions, dark round eye, strong muzzle with good depth and width, good ears, set correctly framing his face. He has a strong neck set into well laid back shoulders, decent return of upper arm, giving just enough forechest which is well filled. Good depth of chest for age, ribs extending well back into a short strong loin, tail strong at root and tapering to tip. Nicely balanced rear with good width of thigh and second thigh, well-turned stifle and low hocks, he moved true with a good length of stride. Shown in excellent muscular condition.

He has good bone and a lovely front assembly with well-laid shoulders, good return of upper arm and well-filled forechest. Nice bone for his size. He has a good length of body with nice depth of chest for age. Tends to stand a little high in the rear at times. Rear angulation is balanced with low hocks. Good croup and tail set. Lovely wheaten puppy who is shapely and well balanced of good type, size, and coat colour. He has an excellent head of good proportions, well-set ears framing his handsome face, round eyes, ideal amount of stop and strength in muzzle. He has parallel forelegs of good bone and excellent well knuckled feet. Just enough infill of chest. His neck is strong and set into well-sloped shoulders. To be picky, I'd like a little more length of upper arm and his elbow placed slightly further back. He has good length and depth of body. Ribs extend well back into a short loin with good underline. Nicely angled rear with good turn of stifle and width of first and second thigh. Hocks are strong and low to the ground. He's an excellent mover in all directions. Delighted to award him Best Puppy Dog, should have a bright future.

Nice proportions of skull and muzzle and good ear set. Good length of neck and sloping shoulders. Good bone for size. Pasterns and feet still need to tighten as he matures. Nice shape of ribbing, giving strong top line and gradual underline, strong loin. Moderately angled rear. Standing a bit high in the rear and still a lot of growing and filling out to do. He moved true coming and going.

Handsome, mature, and upstanding red wheaten male, who I felt had the best front and movement in this class. He has a strong, long, crested neck, set into well laid-back shoulders, with equal length and return of upper arm putting his elbows underneath him and close to his ribs. Well-filled forechest, with plenty of heart room. Perfectly parallel forelegs of quality bone, and excellent well knuckled feet. Good height, width, and depth proportions to his ribbing, which extends well back into a strong short loin, with ideal top and underlines. He has a good croup and tail set. Excellent width of first and second thigh. Well turned stifle, and strong hocks. He moves with a long, low stride, which is both free and easy, and true coming and going. 22 month old, red wheaten female, darker and of a lighter build than 1, shown in excellent coat and condition. She is well proportioned for her size, being critical I would prefer a bit more bone on her and shorter nails. She has a pretty head, which is feminine, of good proportions, with lovely ears and a strong muzzle. Kind, dark, round eyes. Lovely crested neck, set into sloping shoulders, with good return of upper arm. Just enough infill of chest. Elbows are close to body. Nicely shaped ribcage, which could be a little deeper to reach elbow, strong topline and loin. Well muscled rear, with good width to first and second thigh. Well turned stifle and strong hocks. She moved well, free and at one with her handler.
