Official Judges Critique

Judging: Greyhound, Hound Group

My thanks go to the City of Birmingham for this invitation to judge, I was pleased with my entry of beautiful Greyhounds, we had a decent size ring in the best in show hall and my thanks to my 2 excellent stewards who kept us running like clockwork. My comments are that overall I feel the breed is in a good place, the quality in my 2 open classes was world class and I cannot explain just how much I enjoyed judging these. As always my entry was mixed between both show and racig type, both as equally important as the other thank you for taking the time to bring and present all your beautiful hounds to me.

1st: 2111 HOWLETT, Mrs Michaela Jane & BOGGIA, Miss Clare Rubicon's Don't Stop Believing (Imp USA) (Imp USA) Brindle parti colour male, what a handful! once he learns to control his legs he will be beautiful, just how i like them at this age, lots of quality, good bone, lovely lines, lots of scope to mature into. Lovely head, correct bite, good rose ears, long neck into well placed shoulders, stands over good ground, balanced for and aft, in his class he was a little erratic but with a change of handler and a slower pace in the challenge he pulled it together  and covered the ground with powerful ease, will watch how he matures with interest, Best Puppy.

Class 989 PGD (4 Entries) Abs: 0
I really enjoyed this class, the 4 dogs are all of racing type, all had muscle in spades and were beutifully conditioned

1st: 2114 KING, Dr Nick & LEIGHTON, Mr Gerry Conors Matic at Harkinleigh -  I have admired this black dog before from the ringside, from glancing him in a line up you would think he was rom show lines, he has the most beautiful outline and you eye cant help but be caught and captured by him, his coat gleams. he is all hound and power, beautiful head and expression, strong neck into clean well placed shoulders with matching rear angles, good depth of chest and excellent underline. he covers the ground with ease with a powerful true gait.

1st: 2122 SAWYER, Ms H Jaxx Teller At Stonelow - Parti colour male of racing lines, he stands over good ground and has an attractive head and expression, muscular neck into a decent shoulder with complimentary rear angles. I would prefer a slightly better overline being critical but he is a lovely boy who is steady on the move and true.

Class 991 OD (3 Entries) Abs: 0

What a beautiful class this was, all so similar from this clever breeding kennel, I was literally splitting hairs and I'm sure on another day these could have changed order slightly.

1st: 2104 AHRENS, Mrs Bitte & PRIMAVERA, Mr Pierluigi It Dk UK Swed Int Ch SOBERS GASTON - CC - Red quality male, the most handsome of heads, chisseled and detailed with good under jaw, correct bite, perfect tight rose shaped ears, longest of necks into beautiful shoulders, so clean to run your hands over, his angles are balanced and he has beautiful under and overline , beautiful sweeping quarters to low set hocks. he really comes to life on the move, true gait both on the go around and up and down shown off to perfection by his young, talented handler. I had no hesitation awarding him the Dog CC.
2nd: 2121 SALMISTRARO, ms PAOLO SOBERS CASSIUS - Another quality red male who screams greyhound at you, his outline flows rom the tip of his nose to the end of his tail, he had many of the same qualities as my winner, lovely tight feet. my only tiny nitpick between them was that he had a slightly lighter eye, that said his overall quality cannot be ignored, he powers round the ring like he could do this all day. I was proud to award him the res CC a very close decision.

1st: 2105 AHRENS, Mrs Bitte & PRIMAVERA, Mr Pierluigi SOBERS HAVANNAH - even tho she was a little settled she just screams quality and will be another start in the making I am sure, I loved her femininity she has the most beautiful detailed head with correct bite, nice tight rose shaped ears, beautiful arched strong neck, excellent layback of shoulder, balanced angles, lovely underline and tuck up, sweeping quarters, even though she was a little unsettled she powered round the ring with precise footfall, reach and drive. I look forward to watching how she matures.

I stood back for a good few minutes and took in the pure beauty of this class, all 3 girls I have admired for a long time, my 3rd place was my res CC last itme I judged and I still love her now she was unlucky to be in such a strong class. This really came down to nitpicking on my places, and how they were coping also on the carpets on the move however in the end my places are as below, I couldn't start without saying just how honoured I was to go over these 3 ladies, thank you.

1st: 2103 AHRENS, Mrs Bitte & PRIMAVERA, Mr Pierluigi It Esp Ch DK Ch UK SU Ch Int Ch SOBERS GERALDINE - there's a word that I don' use alot but that is ‘Class’ and both my 1 & 2 I would happily describe as this and you can extend that to ‘World Class’ but today it was to be the day of this beautiful elegant red female, if you want to learn about the breed I suggest you take a long look at her for I feel she is as close to the breed standard as you can get, ]her head, pretty as can be, detailed and elegant, good under jaw, correct bite, super rose shaped ears, the longest strong muscular arched neck, your hands flow into her clean well laid back shoulders, she has an excellent forchest and heaps of heart room in her well sprung ribs, her muscle tone is out of this world and you can feel she is just made to do the job she was born to do, she has all the curves in the right places without being over done. she coped beutifully with the ring moving with a light and steady true action, with perfect footfall, she really captivates you and demands your attention. I was proud to award her the CC and Best of Breed and to see her go on to win a super hound group and on Sunday take Reserve Best In Show in a stellar line up.
2nd: 2119 NEWSHAM, Mrs Elaine Ch Ch Europa Decuma via Windspiel (Cze Imp)- Many of my comments on 1 apply to this lovely quality red girl, she has always been a favourite of mine and she is another who for me just screams breed type, the most feminine of heads, strong long neck, excellent silhouette and balanced angles, she is extremely sound coming and going and on the go around, I was really splitting hairs and she was unlucky to meet 1 on such amazing form. These on another day could be in any order. stunning. Res CC
