Pyrenean Mountain Dogs.

Thank you to exhibitors for accepting me as a stand-in for Gary Clarke who, unfortunately, was not well. Also a big thanks to exhibitors for waiting around on such a warm day to be 4th breed in the ring. It certainly affected some dogs adversely, as did the surface of the ring which caused some adjusting of gait (mainly by handlers, the dogs being built for such conditions).

Puppy Dog (1)

1st Gillandant Harvest Night at Pyrcot (Kennedy.) 10 months. As raw as expected but still had an elegance about him and ‘enough dog’ to tick the ‘strongly built’ box. Well shaped head with enough curve of skull and a lovely subtle slope from skull to muzzle. Good dark pigment of lips, nose and eyes with the latter being beautifully shaped and giving the desired thoughtful expression. Ears set correctly. Ideal for neck length and along with his thick ‘mane’ projected an image of strength even at this age. Level topline with surprisingly muscular loin and nicely angled croup with long, fringed tail. Needs to develop slightly more in bone for ideal balance. Moved easily but with slightly diagonal gait at this stage of his development. This, in turn, made him adjust his front movement to accommodate. A lot will change with maturity’s magic wand. BPIB.

Junior Dog (1)

1st Repeat.

Post Grad Dog (1)

1st Estom Patou Von Traumberg with Sketrick (Imp Cze) (Waters). This tall, elegant boy had clearly had enough of the long day and was fed up with whole shenanigans. While his handler was on the verge of calling it a day, she sensibly moved him again and he decided to cooperate with being handled. At only 2yrs old he is understandably not finished in development but what is there now is a good indication of what is to come. Head is well made and pigment was excellent. Body shape made a good outline in profile but he just needs to broaden slightly in chest to make the most of his overall balance. Moved easily enough but, following on from the previous observation, could have a touch more width between limbs.

Open Dog (5 2 abs)

1st ANN Ch Rivergroves Sweet Dreams Are Made of This (Trinka). Very smart mature dog with so much going for him. Lovely headpiece with ideal balance of skull to muzzle with gentle slope joining the two parts. Eyes well shaped, dark and with the ‘dreaming of the mountains’ expression setting off the whole picture. Just right for ribbing and width of back which had well developed muscle. Moved with an unhurried gait (once I asked the handler to slow up a bit) and with a wheeled tail (which started off a bit tight but then relaxed into a more typical carriage). A good combination of elegance, power and type took him to the top today. CC and BOB.

2nd Bel Ch Mangrove Xiphos Spartan Swordsman at Darmar. (Reilly) Very imposing but slightly younger boy who still has his best to come. Beautiful headpiece being balanced, well pigmented and textbook eyes. Ideal length of neck with ‘mane’ adding impetus to his impression of strength. A tad longer in loin than I expected but good quality muscle kept it all working efficiently. Still needs the maturity to give him the Wow Factor - which I think will be evident before long. Showed real strength of hindquarters going away and, while sound, not quite as neat coming to today, but a lovely unhurried side gait made the best of his shape. RCC.

3rd Pafaxen Rewrite the Stars (Jasper). I must mention this lovely boy who was so beautifully presented and handled. Just gave way on headpiece for my personal preference. Soundness and body condition was spot on.

Veteran Dog (3 1 abs)

These two senior gentlemen were being sensible and taking it easy!

1st Lisjovia A Sky Full of Stars.(Jones). 7Yr and with his lovely thick outer coat and excellent depth of effective undercoat I could see why he felt the need to take it easy! However, moved OK at a typical unhurried speed. Certainly gave an impression of strength and had correct width of back. Head a tad heavier than I prefer but definitely had that wistful gaze that is so indicative of the breed’s character. Tending to relax in topline very slightly – and on this warm day, I don’t blame him!

2nd Sketrick Patou (ai) (Wells). Rising 10 and a lovely head type with gentle slope from skull to muzzle, excellent pigment and well shaped eyes. As expected, chest of good depth and width and gave the impression of strength with some elegance. Finding it slightly tough going on the move today and tending to ‘step outwards’ with front legs when coming to and adapting his overall gait to accommodate it.

Limit Bitch (2)

1st Chia Apaltasunez Avec Kricarno (imp Cz Rep) (Tadd) Not yet 2 and has time to ‘drop into’ herself in terms of development (being a touch rangy just now). Loved her head type and subtle blending of skull into muzzle. Excellent pigment of eyes, lips and nose. Strong in neck and good topline running nicely into well shaped croup. One of few who displayed the preferred slight curve towards tail tip. Needs to develop a bit more width of chest but back was wide enough to suggest this will happen soon. A steady mover without drama and exaggeration. RCC.

2nd Gillandant Jasmin (Coles). A slightly heavier build who was having an ‘if only’ day today. Beautiful headpiece with super pigment and balance of skull to muzzle. Dark eye was a touch rounder than I prefer. Strong forequarters and chest of good depth. Coat was presented to the nth degree and befitting of her excellent undercoat. Despite her slightly soft condition causing issues with her topline today, she had an easy unhurried and sound gait. Certainly one who is capable of top honours on her day.

Open Bitch (2 1 abs)

1st Ch Pafaxen A Million Dreams JW (Church and Bamford). 3Yrs. Have judged this one as a puppy and junior and feel she was certainly the best I have seen her today. A correctly curved skull, imperceptible stop, dark pigmented eyes, nose and lips gave her the expression that typifies the breed’s origins. Has reached a stage where the chest has deepened just enough and is accompanied by good width of back and ribs carried well back. Good topline transitioning into well shaped rump; no surprise to see the excellent tail set with tail of good length and with the preferred curve. Moved without urgency and kept a typy, attractive shape on the move. Against the male, his slightly more imposing profile was the decider. CC.
