I have such fond memories of this breed back in the 1980's when I first started to judge them and consider myself fortunate to have seen and competed with some of the greats of the time. I spent a memorable day with Joan Mason who gave me an excellent understanding of this wonderful breed, remembering on one such occasion sitting talking about the breed about head shape and type and  it's importance  in defining the breed, which sets it apart from other retrievers. The depth of quality was markedly stronger in bitches today.
